Although CPAS is an Anglican evangelical mission agency, we work in partnership across the denominations and with other agencies in enabling churches to be mission focused by developing leaders – we believe effective leadership is the key to healthy, growing churches.
CPAS offers a range of training opportunities, mentoring support and courses to support the development of leadership at all levels in the church. Obviously, a lot of our work may focus or revolve around clergy, but we also work with lay leaders and leadership teams in parishes across the UK. You may be aware of some of our most recently developed resources including Growing Leaders, a practical course designed to develop lay leaders; Growing Leaders – Youth Edition; Leading Edge – a forum to allow lay and ordained leaders to upack a key issue in local church leadership; and Church Leadership, a subscription-based magazine and website featuring exclusive access to resources. If you haven’t already, then a look at our website will give you a fuller picture of all that we do.

It’s a cause that’s obviously given the congregation food for thought, as 57 males - ranging in age from three to over 80 - have signed up since it was was announced at service on Sunday. The abbey is the first congregation in Fife to take up the project, and member Andrew McLellan, who brought the idea to Dunfermline, hopes more will come forward this Sunday. He chuckled, “I’m not sure if they’re all in the first rank of bakers - some have never tried in their lives - but they’re all going to give it a shot.“Lots of the young boys have signed up as well and we’re very pleased about that.
“I thought this would be something that would be fun to do and people have responded very warmly - but the nett result is that terribly poor children will get education and a better quality of life.
“I’m so pleased by the number of people who’ve been saying what good fun this is - it’s good fun to do some real good.
“I think it will be great - our next aim is to make sure people buy what we bake!”
And already the abbey’s men have promised plenty of goodies to help SLA raise the £220,000 it needs every year.
Mr McLellan, who is making Dayton walnut loaves and an apple turnover, said, “There’s going to be key lime pie, Dundee cake, several people are making flapjacks and we’ve been promised a Mars Bar cake - so already I think people will be queuing up.”
Female relatives are strictly forbidden from helping out but Mr McLellan said, “I have every confidence that all of the 57 men will be practising hard over the next two weeks so it will all be perfection. We hope to get rid of every crumb.”
The bake sale will be held at Dunfermline Abbey after both services on 27th September. Donations are also welcome.

More than half the congregations in the Presbytery were represented at the conference ‘Making a High Impact Welcome’. The 53 participants considered the merits of treating those who come to our church services as special ‘Guests’ and as ‘gifts from God’ to our churches. Consideration was given to the practicalities of helping our guests have a fulfillinig and enriching experience with us and also of how to continue the relationship beyond the initial visit. Powerpoint slides used during the conference are available for download from the main presbytery website.

CTBI hope that local churches will be creative in the ways they mark the Week of Prayer and they would be glad to hear of what has been tried, what works and what doesn’t! Sometimes a pilgrimage around the churches is organised – on each day of the eight days in a different church, following the daily Bible readings. This permits each church to worship in its own style and offer hospitality to others. Some people organise daily prayers in their place of work. Church schools may put on services and events.
This year’s themeThis year’s material is based on that prepared for the work church by a group from ACTS. 1910 was the Edinburgh Mission Conference and there are a number of events taking place during the year to mark the centenary of this important milestone in the history of the ecumenical movement. (further details can be found at www.edinburgh2010.org/
The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity 2010 reflects the themes of Christian unity and mission..Dates of EventsMost places observe the ‘Week’ in January (18th to 25th) others at Pentecost (which calls on 23 May in 2010). Locally, you may make your own decision. To allow for variation, the material only has the year on it and the days are denoted by numbers – one to eight.
